Translating artistic heritage

Beneath its picturesque appearance, the traditional Ibizan finca is above all an architecture of adaptation. Built by locals in response to the demands of climate and agricultural life, these low-slung dwellings with thick, whitewashed lime walls began to evolve as early as the 1930s. Political refugees, artists and architects who found sanctuary on the island adapted the finca to their own needs and their own way of life—with an eye on necessity rather than ornament. 

Our Store Design team naturally turned to this malleable architectural form to conceive a store embedded within its insular context. Locally quarried limestone was cut and assembled in opus incertum, echoing the paving of Ibiza’s historic streets. Easy to clean it covers both the floor and the surfaces of the two sculptural sinks where consultations take place. A third, larger wooden counter houses a Fragrance Library, its warm hue contrasting with the rear walls: finished in textured white plaster, these recall Balearic domestic architecture while helping to temper the island’s heat. As the finca is a modest dwelling, often built from what was already at hand, the building’s foundations and structural elements are deliberately left exposed.

The store’s distinct character instead emerges through furnishings that would not seem out of place in a home—as though they had been brought by a newcomer settling on the island. Black metal shelving salvaged from our now-closed Leipzig store has been reworked into curved timber screens displaying the skin, hair and body care ranges. Mounted on the wall, close to the Fragrance Library, a lamp designed in-house in recycled aluminium and fibreglass casts a warm, solar glow—akin to the sunlight that, outside, strikes the limewashed surfaces of the fincas.
